Are you planning to get your motorcycle licence and hit the road soon? Then proper preparation is essential. In addition to the mandatory practical exams, you must also pass the motorcycle theory test. In this blog, we'll explain how the test works, how many questions you'll get, how long it takes, and what you should pay extra attention to.

How does the motorcycle theory test work?

Before you can take your practical motorcycle exam, you must first pass the motorcycle theory test. The test consists of 50 knowledge and hazard perception questions covering traffic rules, traffic awareness, and safe participation in traffic.

To pass, you must answer at least 41 out of 50 questions correctly. This means you may make a maximum of 9 mistakes.

The test is very similar to the car theory test but also includes questions that are specifically aimed at motorcycle riders.

How much time do you get?

For the standard motorcycle theory test, you have 30 minutes to complete the exam. This time applies to the entire test, so you can decide how much time to spend on each question.

Read each question carefully and avoid answering too quickly. With good preparation, 30 minutes is more than enough to complete all questions carefully.

Do you have dyslexia or would you simply like some extra time? You can choose an extended theory test, which gives you 45 minutes to complete the exam. Please note that an additional fee applies.

Do you already have a car driving licence? That can be an advantage

If you already have a car driving licence or have previously passed the car theory test, you'll have a head start.

Around 80% of the theory is the same as the car theory test. Many traffic rules, road situations, and right-of-way rules are identical. In some cases, the Dutch driving authority (CBR) even uses virtually the same question, with only the learner car replaced by a learner motorcycle.

As a result, you'll likely recognise many of the situations from your previous theory studies.

Don't underestimate the motorcycle theory test

Although having a car driving licence certainly helps, it's important not to underestimate the motorcycle theory test.

Many candidates assume they'll pass easily without much preparation. In practice, however, much of the traffic knowledge learned for the car theory test fades over time. In addition, the motorcycle theory test includes topics that are unique to motorcycles and are not covered in the car theory exam.

That's why proper preparation remains essential, even if you've been driving a car for years.

Example of a motorcycle-specific theory question

Here's an example of a question that only appears on the motorcycle theory test:

At which sign may a motorcycle with a sidecar enter?

  • Sign 1: No motorcycles.
  • Sign 2: No motor vehicles with more than two wheels.

A motorcycle with a sidecar is still considered a motorcycle, so it may not enter at Sign 1. At the same time, it has more than two wheels because of the sidecar, meaning it may not pass Sign 2 either.

The correct answer is therefore: C. Neither sign.

Questions like these demonstrate that the motorcycle theory test also assesses knowledge specific to motorcycles.

Prepare well for your motorcycle theory test

Do you want to pass your motorcycle theory test on your first attempt? Then good preparation is the key to success. By studying the theory thoroughly and practising different types of exam questions, you'll significantly increase your chances of passing the first time.

Take advantage of an online motorcycle theory course or choose a one-day motorcycle theory course. That way, you'll enter the exam fully prepared and one step closer to earning your motorcycle licence.
