What Are Railway Beacons?

In the Netherlands, trains run frequently on railways, which sometimes cross roads. To warn drivers that a railway crossing is approaching, special signs called railway beacons (spoorwegbakens) are placed along the road.

These beacons are positioned on both sides of the road as you near a level crossing. The stripes on the beacons indicate the distance to the crossing.

How to Read the Lines on a Beacon

Railway beacons use a simple system:

  • 3 stripes = 240 meters from the crossing
  • 2 stripes = 160 meters from the crossing
  • 1 stripe = 80 meters from the crossing

After passing the final 1-stripe beacon, the railway crossing will appear after 80 meters. Understanding these distances helps you slow down safely and stay alert.

Which Side of the Road Should You Pass On?

It’s especially important at night to know which side of the sign to pass. You can tell by looking at the direction of the stripes: extend the lines downward, and where they meet the road indicates the side you should drive on.

Why Recognizing Beacon Distances Matters

Knowing how far you are from a railway crossing can prevent accidents and help you react in time. This is crucial for your safety and for passing your theory exam!
