Trailer License Plate Rules

In this article, Nutheorie's course instructor explains the essential differences between light and heavy trailers within Dutch legislation. The core of the regulations revolves around the 750 kg limit (maximum permitted mass).

Did you know that with a standard car license (B), you can tow a trailer more often than most people think? Many drivers are in the dark about the rules for weight and license plates. As an instructor at Nutheorie I see these questions coming up every day. In this blog, I'll explain exactly how it works, so you can avoid fines and be fully prepared for your CBR exam.

Why driving license B is often sufficient for your trailer

Many people immediately think of the BE driving license (the “trailer driver's license”) when they see a trailer. But with driving license B you can always tow a trailer up to a maximum permitted mass of 750 kg. These are often the so-called “unbraked” trailers that you use for a move or a trip to the landfill.

When do you choose a white or yellow license plate?

The type of license plate is not based on the color of your car, but on the maximum weight of the trailer.

1. Trailers up to 750 kg: The white plate

If your trailer, including load, should not exceed 750 kg, it is seen as an extension of your car.

  • License plate: The trailer gets the same license plate number as your car.
  • Color: One white plate with black letters.
  • Please note: You must not unscrew the yellow plate on your car! You must have an official white plate made.

2. Trailers over 750 kg: The yellow plate

As soon as a trailer is allowed to weigh more than 750 kg, it legally becomes its “ownvehicle".

  • License plate: The trailer has a own, unique license plate (other than your car).
  • Color: An official yellow plate with an EU symbol and NL sign.
  • Papers: This trailer requires its own registration certificate.

Legal requirements: Prevent unnecessary fines

A license plate must comply with strict rules. As a course instructor, I always insist on this, because a mistake can result in an expensive ticket:

  • The label: A handwritten license plate is prohibited. There must always be an official approval mark on it.
  • Visibility: The plate must be fully legible. Snow, mud or a towbar that blocks the numbers are punishable.
  • Bike carriers: A bike carrier never weighs more than 750 kg, which is why a bike carrier always uses a white plate.
