Start: Basic Requirements & Preparation

Before you book a theory exam with the CBR, it is useful to first check whether you meet the basic requirements. This way, you won't be faced with any unexpected surprises on the day of the exam.

Age Requirements

Not everyone is allowed to take the theory exam immediately. These are the official age limits:

  • Car (License B): You may take the theory exam from the age of 16.
  • Motorcycle (License A): You may take the theory exam from the age of 17. Please note! The requirements for the practical exam depend on which type of motorcycle license you wish to obtain (A1, A2, or A).
  • Moped / Scooter (License AM): You may take the theory exam for the moped from the age of 15.5.

Identification

You cannot enter the CBR without a valid form of identification. Always ensure you bring one of the following documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid identity card
  • Valid residence permit

Please note! Your ID must not be expired. Unfortunately, without a valid document, you cannot participate in the exam, which would be a waste of your time and money.

Step 1: Reserve a theory exam?

Booking your theory exam at the CBR is easier than you think. Below is an overview of the simplest way to get it done:

How to Reserve Your Theory Exam:

  1. Log in to Mijn CBR with DigiD. Go to mijn.cbr.nl and log in with your DigiD. Don’t have a DigiD? Then you can use the ‘Theory Exam Application’ (Aanvraag theorie-examen) form.
  2. Choose the Right Exam. Select the correct category (e.g., car, moped, or motorcycle). You can choose between a standard exam, an exam with extra time, or other variants depending on your situation.
  3. Select Location, Date, and Time. Find the CBR location where you want to take your theory exam and a time slot that suits you.
  4. Pay Online. You pay immediately via iDEAL. Your reservation is only final once payment is completed.
  5. Receive and Save the Confirmation. After your reservation, you will receive an email confirmation containing your reservation number. Save this or print it out and take it with you to the exam center.

Rescheduling an Exam

It is possible to reschedule your exam, but keep the CBR rules in mind. Up to 7 days before your exam, you can usually easily manage this yourself via Mijn CBR. Within that 7-day period, stricter conditions apply, and you can often only move the exam to an earlier time slot (if available).

Authorizing a Training Provider

Do you want your driving school or theory provider (such as NuTheorie) to arrange your exam for you? Then you must grant authorization via Mijn CBR. To do this, you fill in the NuTheorie provider number. Once this is settled, we can reserve the exam on your behalf.

Handy Tips

  • Don't plan your exam at the very last minute (e.g., right before a holiday or your practical exam). This leaves you room for a retake if necessary.
  • Arrive at the exam center at least 15 minutes early on the day of the exam.
  • Always bring a valid ID. Ensure the details match the Personal Records Database (BRP).

Booking via NuTheorie

Are you taking a course with NuTheorie? Then we can also reserve the CBR exam for you. You only need to provide a quick authorization via Mijn CBR. After that, we handle the reservation and link the exam to your course day. This saves you time and hassle, ensuring everything is arranged correctly for you.

Step 2: Exam preparation

Everyone learns differently. It is important to choose a method that suits you to effectively remember the theory:

  • Active Learning: Answer practice questions and take mock exams daily. Preferably as realistically as possible, using the same time limit as the CBR.
  • Visual Learning: Watch videos on traffic situations, animations, and road signs. Visuals help you recognize situations more quickly.
  • Writing and Repetition: Write down rules in your own words. Repetition ensures better retention of the theory.
  • Combining Methods: Alternate between reading, watching videos, and taking practice exams. This helps the material stick better and makes studying less boring.

In NuTheorie's online study materials, you will find all these different learning methods within a single online learning environment, allowing you to combine every approach.

By combining these strategies, you will improve your knowledge of the theory so that you can apply it successfully during the CBR theory exam.

Step 3: Exam Day: What to Expect

The day of your theory exam can be exciting, but knowing exactly what to expect allows you to start calmly and with more self-confidence. Below is an overview of how the exam day unfolds.

Arrival and Check-in

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. This gives you time to settle in and reduce any pre-exam nerves.
  • Register at the kiosk in the exam center by entering your reservation number.
  • Monitor the CBR screens after checking in.
    • If the screen says "Spullen in de locker" (Items in locker), store your belongings immediately and return to the waiting area.
    • If the screen says "Start examen" (Start exam), report to the desk with your ID or passport (Ensure it is a valid document).

How the Exam Proceeds

  • Practice Questions: You start with 2 practice questions. These do not count toward your score; they are simply to help you get used to the system.
  • Test Questions: During the exam, you will encounter 2 test questions. These also do not count, as they are used by the CBR to evaluate the quality of future questions.
  • Language Options: For cars (Category B), you can take the exam in English. For motorcycles and mopeds (A and AM), the exam is almost always only available in Dutch.

Exam Duration

  • Standard Exam: For car, motorcycle, and moped, you have 30 minutes.
  • Extra Time / Individually Guided: If you choose an exam with extra time or an individually guided session, you get 45 minutes.

Extra tip to reduce stress: Just before the exam starts, take a few minutes to breathe deeply and focus. This helps you begin the questions with full concentration.

NuTheorie Course/Exam Day

Are you taking a course with NuTheorie? Then your exam day looks a bit different, providing much more peace of mind and clarity.

  • Morning Prep: You start the day with our intensive course from 07:00 AM to 01:00 PM. During this session, we cover every topic you need to know for the exam.
  • Group Departure: After the lunch break, we head to the CBR together.
  • Full Guidance: Our experienced instructors guide you from start to finish. They assist with registration and wait until you have finished your exam. (In between, you can, of course, still ask questions about the theory).

This way, you don't have to go through the process alone, and you can enter the exam room with total confidence.

Step 4: During the exam: tips & strategies

The CBR exam can be exciting or stressful, but with a good strategy, you can significantly increase your chances of passing. Here is a step-by-step approach to make the most of your exam:

  • Read the question carefully

Take your time to read the question thoroughly. Ensure you fully understand what is being asked before choosing an answer. Pay close attention to small details in the text or the accompanying image. The theory exam is, in many ways, a test of reading comprehension.

  • Review all answer options

Read all options before making a choice. Sometimes multiple answers may seem correct, but there is usually one that is the most accurate. Double-check your answer and remain critical.

  • Mark difficult questions

Use the "flag" or bookmark function to mark questions you are unsure about. This allows you to quickly return to them later via the overview screen. This prevents you from losing time and ensures you can review everything once more.

  • Use navigation options wisely

During the exam, you can always go back to a previous question by clicking "Previous." This is useful if you want to revise something later or if you suspect you made a mistake.

  • Take your time

Hasty decisions often lead to errors. Manage your time well and work through the exam calmly. If you have time left over, go back to the first question and verify all your answers again.

  • Trust your first instinct

When in doubt, it is usually better to stick with your initial thought. Often, your first answer is the correct one. Only change it if you are absolutely certain you made a mistake.

  • Examine images thoroughly

Many questions include images. Take the time to fully view and understand the visual context before selecting an answer.

  • Know the passing requirements

For the CBR theory exam, there is a maximum number of errors allowed to pass. Below is an overview per category:

By following these tips step-by-step, you will reduce stress and increase your chances of successfully completing the CBR exam.

Step 5: After the exam: results & next steps

The CBR theory exam is over. Now comes the moment of truth: the results. It's important to know how to receive it, what's on it and what next steps you can take.

Immediate Results

  • CBR Screen: Immediately after the exam, your result will appear on the screen. This way, you instantly know whether you have passed or not.
  • E-mail: You will receive an official confirmation by email within 15 minutes to a maximum of 1 day. This is handy to keep for your records or to show to your driving school.

What is on the Result Form?

the result form provides more details than just “passed” or “failed”. Pay attention to the following sections:

  • Number of correct answers: This shows exactly how many questions you answered correctly.
  • Weaker sections: The form also shows the categories where you scored lower. This information is incredibly valuable, especially if you need to retake the exam.
  • Validity of the result: If you passed the theory exam, it is valid for 18 months. Within this period, you must complete your practical lessons and take your practical exam.

Next Steps

If You Passed:

  • Congratulations! You are ready to enter the next phase: practical lessons and ultimately the practical exam.
  • Plan ahead: Schedule your practical lessons and exam within the 18-month validity period. This keeps your knowledge up to date and ensures you are optimally prepared.

If You Failed:

  • Don't panic: Carefully review the weaker sections on your result form.
  • Study targetedly: Look closely at the parts you got wrong. You can pay extra attention to these specific topics while studying.
  • Book a retake: Schedule a new exam via MIJN CBR. Thanks to the feedback, you can now study more effectively and increase your chances of passing.
