How to pass the CBR theory exam in one go with CBR practice exams

Prepare smarter, practise realistically, and pass the first time

Passing your driving licence starts with the CBR theory exam, which many learners find challenging due to tricky questions and time pressure. With the right preparation, however, passing on your first attempt is absolutely possible. At NuTheorie, we prepare students using clear explanations, video-based scenarios, and realistic CBR practice exams that reflect the real exam format.

By practicing with mock exams and understanding how to apply traffic rules in real situations, you can enter the exam confidently and fully prepared.

CBR Theory Exam Preparation with NuTheorie

We offer daily one-day courses in which you learn all the theory exam questions in a single day and take the exam at the CBR immediately afterward. Thanks to our experience, we know exactly how the exam is structured and which theory exam tips truly work. If a one-day course isn’t an option, no problem—NuTheorie also offers an online course

This allows you to practise at home whenever it suits you best. The online course consists of videos recorded by our professional instructors, who explain everything just like during the classroom course, but in video format. This means you can rewatch difficult topics as often as needed. In total, the course includes around eight hours of video content, along with practice questions for each chapter. You also receive an extensive e-book if you prefer reading the material as well.

When you sign up for the online course, you’ll also get several realistic practice exams that look just like the real CBR exam, so you can go into your exam fully prepared and confident. We see no difference in pass rates between the online course and the one-day course. So no matter how you choose to prepare, starting with NuTheorie is always the right choice.

The updated CBR theory exam (since mid-2025)

Since the update, the theory exam consists of 50 questions. The sections on knowledge and insight are now fully mixed together. This means you not only need to know the traffic rules, but also demonstrate that you can apply them in real-life situations.

Key features of the car theory exam:

  • Number of questions: 50
  • Passing score: at least 44 correct answers
  • Question types: multiple choice, yes/no, drag-and-drop, and video questions

Time limit:

  • 30 minutes for the standard exam
  • 45 minutes for an extended exam (for example, if you experience exam anxiety or need extra time)

The addition of video questions makes the exam much more realistic, as you assess real traffic situations as if you were sitting behind the wheel yourself.

Theory exam tips to pass on your first attempt

Understand how the questions are asked

The CBR doesn’t just test whether you know the rules, but mainly whether you can apply them. Memorising a traffic sign isn’t enough—you also need to understand how it works in situations involving other traffic. Many mistakes are caused by misreading questions, so always read carefully and make sure you understand what is actually being asked.

Practise with video questions

Many learners find the video questions stressful because they are new. That’s why NuTheorie offers online learning materials, allowing you to practise in advance and build background knowledge before the course. The big advantage: by doing many CBR practice exams with video questions, you quickly get used to this format. You learn to analyse situations better and make faster decisions.

Study in clear, manageable blocks

Don’t study for hours on end. Short, intensive study sessions of about 60 minutes, with breaks in between, lead to better concentration and retention.

Understand the rules instead of memorising them

Simply memorising rules often works only temporarily. Try to understand why a rule exists. This helps with insight-based questions and makes it easier to apply the rules during driving lessons.

Take plenty of practice exams

Repetition is the key to success. By regularly taking CBR practice exams, you’ll start recognising question patterns and discover which topics you still find difficult. With us, in addition to a fully organised one-day course, you also get access to our online learning materials. This allows you to prepare in advance by practising with videos and using an e-book. You also receive practice exams to test yourself before and after the course.

Keep an eye on the time

During the standard exam, you have only 30 minutes, which equals an average of 36 seconds per question. Practise occasionally with a timer so you learn how to handle time pressure.

Stay calm during the exam

It’s normal to feel nervous, but don’t let stress take over. When you enter the exam room, find your assigned table number and sit down. Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself. Your exam time doesn’t start until you press “start exam” on the screen. First, make sure you’re relaxed, then begin. Read each question carefully and eliminate the most illogical answers first—often only one option will remain.

Common mistakes in the theory exam

From our experience at NuTheorie, we see that learners often go wrong in the following areas:

  • Starting to study too late
  • Memorising facts only, without practising insight-based questions
  • Not practising enough with video questions
  • Not taking practice exams under time pressure
  • Clicking through questions too quickly due to stress
  • Reading mistakes

By avoiding these pitfalls, you significantly increase your chances of passing.

Why practice is important

Without practising, it is almost impossible to pass on your first attempt. Taking CBR practice exams helps you to:

  • become familiar with the style and structure of the questions,
  • get used to video questions,
  • identify which topics you still find difficult.

We use exam-focused practice questions and clear explanations, so you know exactly what to expect. We also teach you how to pay close attention to the wording of each question.

Pass your theory exam in one day with NuTheorie

Many learners find it difficult to stay motivated when studying independently for weeks. That’s why NuTheorie offers a proven solution: our one-day course.

  • In the morning, we cover all the important theory topics.
  • Our instructors explain difficult rules using clear examples and helpful memory aids.
  • You practise at home and after the course with exam questions and video questions.
  • After the course, you go to the CBR together with us and take the exam.

This approach combines intensive learning with immediate application, greatly increasing your chances of passing your theory exam on the first attempt.

We also offer the car theory one-day course and the online course in English. So if you prefer to follow the course in English, that is absolutely possible. Our experienced instructors provide all explanations in English and are happy to answer all your questions.

Extra tips from our instructors

  • Recognise patterns: many questions are variations of the same traffic rules.
  • Participate actively: ask questions during the course, answer along actively, and come prepared by practising at home in advance.
  • Learn visually: traffic signs, right-of-way situations, and intersections are easier to remember with images and videos.
  • Stay calm when in doubt: use elimination to cross out incorrect answers.
  • Unsure about an answer? If you doubt a previously selected answer during the exam, always stick with your first choice—your initial instinct is usually the correct one.

What if you still fail?

Even with good preparation, it can happen that you don’t pass. Don’t panic—you can always retake the exam. Analyse where things went wrong and practise those specific areas. At NuTheorie, you can easily join the course again at a high discount, so you’ll be even better prepared for your retake.

Conclusion

The updated CBR theory exam consists of 50 questions that test both knowledge and insight, supplemented with video questions. You have 30 minutes (or 45 minutes with an extended exam) to demonstrate that you understand the rules and have sufficient traffic insight.

The most important theory exam tips are: understand the rules, practise extensively with video questions, study actively, and take regular CBR practice exams.
